Winetaster Events

Winetasters is a non-profit organization offering tastings of interest to everyone from beginner to connoisseur. Our tastings, feature wines from all over the world and cover the entire wine spectrum. Many of the wines come from our extensive cellar, which has been built up over the last ten years and stored under ideal conditions. These wines represent an investment by our members, allowing Winetasters to present tastings at costs substantially below current market values.

We hold single blind wine tastings monthly from September to June, usually beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. "Single blind" means that you'll know what the eight wines are but you won't know which is which. A ninth "mystery wine" usually follows.

Below you will find a list of upcoming and past Winetasters events. All events are subject to change. As the details are finalized (approximately three months before the scheduled date), it is posted here - click on the appropriate entry to see details if they are available. Mailings will then occur one month in advance of the event. Online reservations will open at the same time.

Unless otherwise noted, tastings are held in the Burgundy Room, North York Memorial Community Hall, 5110 Yonge St.. (under library), North York Centre Subway.

Come and join with us for some great wine, delicious finger foods & of course witty banter.

1989 Bordeaux

09/06/2010 - 18:30

I sometimes wonder (as I am sure most of our members do) how those highly touted 1989 Bordeaux reds are aging. The large 1989 crop produced rich, fleshy wines that typically possess soft, silky tannins and high alcohol levels. It was the warmest summer since 1949 and the picking began very early on August 28th, the earliest since 1893. In our world of instant gratification and custom vinted wines for immediate consumption, this tasting is what may be best described as an extraordinary event. We will explore the subtleties and complexities of well aged Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Sailing into Summer - May 20

20/05/2010 - 18:30

Ernest Hemingway wrote: “Reality is an illusion that occurs due to lack of alcohol.” With that in mind, our reality is blessedly changing for the better with summer just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than overlooking our city’s waterfront: boats, water, sunshine. With these images in mind we've partnered up with the National Yacht Club to present a hearty meal to ward off the last of spring’s cool grip and paired with some fantastic wines from all over the world that promise hope for a beautiful summer.

California Pinot

12/05/2010 - 18:30

0ur May tasting asks the question “what is all the fuss about?” Pursuant to the “Sideways” phenomenon, “we don’t want no Merlot”, we are hunting for a clear expression of California Pinot. Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River We've avoided the 15%+ alcohol fruit bombs that dominate warmer climate expressions and collected some cooler appellation wines that show various winemaking styles.
