Past Winetaster Events

Winetasters is a non-profit organization offering tastings of interest to everyone from beginner to connoisseur. Our tastings, feature wines from all over the world and cover the entire wine spectrum. Many of the wines come from our extensive cellar, which has been built up over the last ten years and stored under ideal conditions. These wines represent an investment by our members, allowing Winetasters to present tastings at costs substantially below current market values.

We hold single blind wine tastings monthly from September to June, usually beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. "Single blind" means that you'll know what the eight wines are but you won't know which is which. A ninth "mystery wine" usually follows.

Below you will find a list of past Winetasters events.

2010 Summer Patio Party

22/06/2010 - 18:30

June 22nd – mark it down on your calendar. We are reprising last year’s successful “end of term” event – our Patio Party at Globe Bistro. For those who weren’t there last year, it's not a tasting, not the Christmas Party, not a Spring Dinner. But it is a chance to come out socialise with your fellow wine and food enthusiasts! Come and join with us for some great wine, delicious finger foods & of course witty banter.

1989 Bordeaux

09/06/2010 - 18:30

I sometimes wonder (as I am sure most of our members do) how those highly touted 1989 Bordeaux reds are aging. The large 1989 crop produced rich, fleshy wines that typically possess soft, silky tannins and high alcohol levels. It was the warmest summer since 1949 and the picking began very early on August 28th, the earliest since 1893. In our world of instant gratification and custom vinted wines for immediate consumption, this tasting is what may be best described as an extraordinary event. We will explore the subtleties and complexities of well aged Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Sailing into Summer - May 20

20/05/2010 - 18:30

Ernest Hemingway wrote: “Reality is an illusion that occurs due to lack of alcohol.” With that in mind, our reality is blessedly changing for the better with summer just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than overlooking our city’s waterfront: boats, water, sunshine. With these images in mind we've partnered up with the National Yacht Club to present a hearty meal to ward off the last of spring’s cool grip and paired with some fantastic wines from all over the world that promise hope for a beautiful summer.

California Pinot

12/05/2010 - 18:30

0ur May tasting asks the question “what is all the fuss about?” Pursuant to the “Sideways” phenomenon, “we don’t want no Merlot”, we are hunting for a clear expression of California Pinot. Keefer Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River We've avoided the 15%+ alcohol fruit bombs that dominate warmer climate expressions and collected some cooler appellation wines that show various winemaking styles.

1997 Barolo Horizontal

14/04/2010 - 18:30

Barolo is one of many to claim the title "Wine of kings, and king of wines". This has been quoted for centuries and many still argue that it is Italy’s greatest wine. Vigna Giachini Its stylistic origin began in the mid 1800’s when a French oenologist named Louis Oudart turned the simple, sweet, wine from Piedmont into what we now identify as modern Barola.

Pesquera Vertical

10/03/2010 - 18:30

In our March tasting, we stay in Iberia and move from the Douro River to its Spanish namesake, the Duero. Pesquera Reserva Not far from the vineyards that support the fortified wines of Portugal is the beautiful Ribera del Duero wine region. Sited on the banks of the Duero River, 120 km north of Madrid, this area is known for great wine as well as medieval cathedrals, Roman-era constructions, fortresses and castles.
