Château Latour: Tasting Greatness

(Sep. 11, 2013) — In an era of pop-up stores and pop-up restaurants, when a favourite put-down is, “That’s s-o-o-o last week,” Winetasters would like to buck the trend.

On Wednesday, September 11th, 2013, members of Winetasters will gather to celebrate a wine that’s s-o-o-o last century, and the century before that, and before that, and before that. In the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines, Château Latour was one of only four red wines honoured with the title Premier Cru. Vines have been grown at Latour since at least the 14th century, and the 1855 top-of-the-heap distinction was earned by producing great wines consistently over centuries.

Clive Coates calls Château Latour simply “the King of Wines.” Should you be lucky enough to sit down to a meal accompanied by Médoc Premiers Crus, etiquette demands that the Latour – notable for its intensity and “compact power” – should be served last.

Latour has a reputation for producing decent wines even in the diciest vintages. Of better vintages, Dutch wine writer Hubrecht Duijker says, “In good years, Latour is a wine for laying down for your children, and in excellent years for your grandchildren.” On September 11th we will taste the following vintages of Château Latour: 1976, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1994 and 1995. A Mystery Wine will also be served.

If the event sells out, paid-up members will be given priority over non-members and guests. If you wish to become a Winetasters member, details are available at our website.

As always with our tastings, this event will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume.
