Pommard Reds: The Flower of Burgundy

(April 9, 2014) — This event has been rescheduled from March. If you signed up for March you are pre-registered for the April event. Please contact us to cancel if you cannot attend.

The essential expression of the Pinot Noir grape is in Red Burgundy wine. Many consider red Burgundy at its best the most sublime of wines. According the the Official Bourgogne Wine Website, Pommard has been recognized as “the flower of Burgundy wines” since the Middle Ages.

Located in the Cote de Beaune, the commune of Pommard received its AOC designation in 1936. Home to 27 Premier Crus, there are no Grand Crus. Interestingly, in 1936 both les Rugiens and les Epenots were offered Grand Cru status. However, they were afraid the restrictions on yield could not be made up by any price premium, so they refused. The market has changed a great deal since then and over the last few years there has been an as yet unsuccessful attempt to gain that now coveted Grand Cru status. We are tasting one of each of these wines and can form our own opinions. Altogether we have seven Premier Crus and one Village wine.

These wines require a period of cellaring to show at their best and we are pleased to have a range of good quality vintages so that we can learn how they develop in the cellar:

  • 1985 1er Cru les Rugiens – Pothier-Rieusset
  • 1985 1er Cru les Epenots – Pothier-Rieusset
  • 1990 1er Cru les Perrieres – Raymond Launay
  • 1990 1er Cru les Chaponnieres – Parent
  • 1996 1er Cru la Refene – Dominique Laurent
  • 1997 1er Cru les Pezerolles – Billard-Gonnet
  • 2003 1er Cru Clos de Verger – Jean-Claude Boisset
  • 2005 Henri de Villamont

We expect this to be a very popular event and hope to see you there.
