Chanson Clos des Feves & Jadot Clos des Ursules

(Wednesday, May 23, 2018) — Domaine Chanson is a storied Burgundian Domaine, founded in the mid-18th Century. Run as a family firm for over two centuries, it was somewhat under the radar in the latter part of the twentieth century. In 1999 there was significant investment by the Bollinger group which led to the Domaine and its wines taking on a new lease of life. It is now definitely “one to watch”, as Hugh Johnson puts it, for top quality Burgundy at all levels, and still at (relatively) reasonable prices. The estate includes 45ha in the best 1ers and Grands Crus of Burgundy, including 25 ha of Beaune 1ers Crus. (There are no Grands Crus in Beaune). Wine making is led by Jean-Pierre Confuron (of the renowned Burgundian wine family), who joined the team in 1999.

Clos des Feves is a 4 ha Monopole of Chanson, located north of the town across the road from Les Bressandes. Our tasting includes a mini vertical, with the 1995 and 1998 are from the previous era, and 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005 from the current new era.

In addition, by way of comparison, we are pouring another Monopole, Louis Jadot’s Clos des Ursules. This is a walled enclave inside the 1er Cru Vignes Franches, south of Beaune. We are pouring the 2001 and 2004.

The red wines from the central and southern parts are typically powerful, tannic, and deeply coloured, while those from the northern area are generally less intensely coloured with softer fruit flavours, so the contrast will be interesting.

We are delighted to welcome Marc Staples as our speaker for the evening. A former director of Toronto Winetasters, Marc is a French Wine Scholar, and a Diploma-holder and instructor for WSET. Most importantly for us, he is a burgundy nut. He tells us that his epiphany was Toronto Winetasters’ DRC tasting a couple of decades ago! We could not have a better guide to lead us through this tasting.

As always with our tastings, this event will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume. Please don’t drink & drive.
