Jadot 1998 Premier Cru

(Jun. 12, 2013) — Our season ends on a high note with a survey of the 1er Cru Red Burgundies from one of the top domaines – Maison Louis Jadot. Top, both in the extent of the domaine, and in the quality of their wines, Jadot is perfect for a comparison of this type. While some consider their wine maker, Jacques Lardière (who has just retired after 40 years) doesn’t always follow “the rules”, there can be no denying the end result is top quality wine with a focus on expressing the terroir.

Clive Coates wrote in 2008, on a comprehensive tasting, that 1998, had turned out to be a very good year that was then fully mature with, the best wines having a further decade ahead of them. The wines showed freshness, elegance and harmony.

Here is an excellent chance to compare the styles of 8 villages from both the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits with vintage and producer “controlled for” (plus our usual mystery wine, about which all I can say is that it will be red wine). Our wines will range in styles: from Volnay, the epitome of elegance and delicacy with its feminine charm and seductive fragrance, to Pommard, four square and powerful, with Chambolle-Musigny perhaps taking the middle ground: lightest of the Côte de Nuits but intense, perfumed & silky.

Just to keep everyone on their toes we have one “village” wine. But what a village! Vosne-Romaée, the greatest Pinot Noir village in the known universe, home to La Romanée-Conti. How will you rate this against the 1er Cru wines from less celestial villages? Come to the tasting to find out.

The wines we will be pouring are (all Jadot, 1998):
1er Cru: Beaune Clos des Ursules, Volnay Clos de La Barre, Morey St Denis Clos des Ormes, Chambolle-Musigny les Feuselottes, Nuits St Georges Les Boudots, Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles St Jacques, Pommard Les Rugiens; and the “village” Vosne-Romanée.

As always with our tastings, this event will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume.
