Mitolo Australian Single Vineyard “G.A.M” Shiraz

(Wednesday, April 25, 2018) — Originally Persian grapes, Australian terroir and an Italian heritage…wonderful things go into Mitolo Shiraz, don’t they?

When the Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950s they brought their Abruzzo region ethos – “forte e gentile” or “strong and gentle”.  And that is what you find in their wines. After many years of working in the family potato business, Frank Mitolo started making wine for family and friends. In 1999, after a long conversation, he and winemaker Ben Glaetzer decided to create the ultimate wine expression of the McLaren Vale wine region.

G.A.M. Shiraz is named after Frank Mitolo’s children (Gemma, Alex, and Marco) and we have the opportunity to try 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. The wines will be at full maturity, given the 10-15 years since harvest.  Each year had its own unique weather and challenges, so it will be a treat to see what each vintage brings.  In addition to that five-year vertical, we will be pouring the 2007 Reiver Shiraz and 2007 Savitar Shiraz cuvees, two more of the eleven wines that Mitolo makes.  And there will also be a “ringer”, the Mitolo Serpico Cabernet Sauvignon. See if you can spot it!

These are full throttle wines, “heroically styled” to quote Hugh Johnson.  Or, if you are Frank Mitolo, you’d say “forte e gentile”!

Our guide for the evening will be Sharon Giffen, a highly knowledgeable wine aficionado and long time Winetaster’s  member and former director.

As always with our events, this will be strictly non-smoking, and we request your cooperation in not wearing any scented after-shave or perfume.  The site is conveniently located on the Yonge Subway. Do not drink and drive.
